A Bit About Me
According to the Even Start Family Literacy Program, "A mother is a child first and the best teacher". The Resource Center agrees with this philosophy. When women are educated, their families become educated. During the pandemic, parents, especially single mothers, were tasked with teaching their children at home. Many of those parents were functionally illiterate and unable to use technology to properly teach their children. Education helped low-income families escape poverty. Founding The Resource Center Career and Technical School was Dr. Pope's strategic method to positively impact families' literacy levels and to improve their workforce skills.
Dr. Pope has worked in adult education for over 20 years. She taught English and TSI college-ready classes at Texas Southern University, Houston Community College, Aldine, and Houston ISD. Dr. Pope served as the Principal of the Even Start Family Literacy Program in Angleton ISD for seven years.
Dr. Pope led a small team of women to help over 200 participants improve their adult basic education levels and earn their GEDs. Under her leadership and a collaborative partnership with Brazosport Community College, students enrolled in English as a Second Language program improved their ability to teach their children, improved their ABE levels, and increased their literacy skills; they improved their socio-economic levels. Mothers became empowered and changed the direction of their lives. Some of their participants opened their own small businesses.
Dr. Pope is a Texas certified ELAR teacher, K-12 Principal, K-12 school counselor, 1-7 ELAR teacher, and K-12 Special Education teacher. Dr. Pope is a certified English as a Second Language teacher. Dr. Pope has taught students in China and the United States online via Blackboard, Canvas, and Zoom. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern. She has served as a therapist and school counselor.
